On The Road - San Pedro to Uyuni

(3/29 - 3/31)
A guided off-road excursion through Eduardo Avaroa National Andean Wildlife Reserve, wrought with flamingos, colorful lagoons, geothermal steam, rock sculptures, and llamas, and the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, estimated to contain 10 billion tons of salt as well as half the world's reserves of lithium.

The popular 3day journey was experienced in the good company of an Australian, South African, German-Chilean, Japanese, and a Bolivian Guide.

*

Salar de Uyuni - the combination of high altitude and bright reflective surfaces make the salt planes blinding. Salt miners extract about 25,000 tons of salt anually, their faces masked. In one sector of the planes is a construction zone -- partially built hotels made of salt blocks. It's said that salt hotels may cause potential damage to the environment if sanitation is not properly disposed of.

*

Isla de Pescado - an island of fossilized coral in the middle of the Salar. The cacti on this fish-shaped island grow at a rate of 1cm per year.

Cheers to the Uyuni troop!
